More electric motorcycle land speed records - Chip Yates, and KillaJoule

Two teams were on the Bonneville Salt Flats for the BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials this week.  These time trials are FIM accredited which turned out to be significant regarding to the 215.96 miles/hr record that Lightning set a couple weeks ago. Results: Chip Yates: Earned four FIM accredited electric motorcycle land speed records, using the same bike.  He did slight reconfigurations of the motorcycle so that it qualified in four different categories.  He therefore was able to get four records in…See More

Lightning strikes second round of TTXGP 2010 with Lightning Motors win

The second race in the TTXGP 2010 North America series was held last weekend (June 6, 2010) at the Road America track in Wisconson. Seven teams competed over the weekend, largely the same field as in race 1 at Infineon. The Lightning Motors bike, ridden by Michael Barnes, handily took first place with a very strong and powerful showing (best lap time 2:57.689, best speed 82.053 m/h). The Agni Motors bike, ridden by Zoe Rem, took second place (best lap time 2:55.874, best speed 82.900 m/h). The…See More

"Actually, the MotoCzysz (say: MO-toe-sizz) has a 12.5kWh battery, with ten hot-swappable 1.25kWh cells. The motor is also pretty great: liquid cooling, and 100HP and 250ft/lb torque continuous... The motor weighs 77 pounds, the battery is ~18 (or…"

"Here's the "other" electric motorcycle racing: http://green.autoblog.com/2010/06/11/mark-miller-wins-tt-zero-on-epic-motoczysz-e1pc/ The MotoCzysz Ep1c is pretty amazing -- it has a 10kWh battery pack, and it managed to average…"

"BTW during the post race press conference I asked "AC or DC" .. basically, the riders don't care about that. They know they can twist the throttle and go. To an extent the minute technical issues aren't important because so long…"

"Yeah, there are other bikes coming up which may become competition for Richards bike. Yes it is AC and the motor itself has its own cooling system. Cooling is turning out to be the key. Half the bikes are AC the other half DC. If you ignore the…"

Neil Blanchard commented on David Herron's blog post The TTXGP 2010 series opening race was a blast
"So, for the other bikes to become competitive again, they have to get much faster? The EV-1 motor is pretty amazing -- and it is AC, right? I think that most of the other bikes are using DC, to save on having to have an inverter onboard. It is also…"

"First issue was handling - they fixed that, and Richard claims it'll handle as well as the other bikes. The second issue was in the control system and I didn't ask him about that. However the lap times were very consistent right around…"

Lightning Motorcycles set 215.96 miles/hr electric motorcycles land speed record this week

This week Lightning Motorcycles went to the Bonneville Salt Flats and made a huge leap forward for electric motorcycle performance, completely shattering previous electric motorcycle land speed records.  Records that had been set by Lightning a year ago.

They made several runs beginning with a practice/qualifying run of 178 miles/hr that itself broke last years record (they'd set themselves) by a few miles/hr. The next run broke 200 miles/hr with a 205 miles/hr speed.  A couple days…

The TTXGP 2010 series opening race was a blast

Last weekend at the Infineon Raceway near San Francisco the TTXGP organization held their inaugural race of the 2010 season. 10 teams came to compete over the weekend. There were practice rounds, qualifying rounds, and the race was on Sunday.

The race was an immensely exciting battle all through the pack. The two front runners were a bike owned by Zero Motorcycles (it was the Team Agni bike which won the 2009 TTXGP last summer), and a new bike built by Lightning…

In electric motorcycle racing drama, the TTXGP camp seems to be ahead

When an empire strikes back it's likely with the expectation that it's swatting a fly. Sometimes the underdog is able to win even though the empire looks like an 8000 pound gorilla that can smash anything in its path. These tortured allusions to movies and wildlife don't do justice to the strange battle brewing in the nascent sport of electric motorcycle racing. As noted in earlier reporting the old simple story (TTXGP and FIM collaborating to create… Continue
