June 1, 2010 to August 19, 2010
A race around the world for zero emission vehicles. The date for the start is set for June 2010 and runs across 20 countries. Norway is too far north of the route to be included. The organizer, Louis Palmer, drove around the world in an EV in 2008.

That seems very strange with the relative weights of Thundersky modules. Get a move on and you can take part in that round the world in 80 days with/ against I`ll see if i can find out more. Electrolux.

That is (was) the plan. Then I discovered that by using 44 pieces of 90 Ah Thunder Sky cells, the total allowed weight would be exceeded. Reducing the capacity to 60 Ah didn't take off as much weight as I expected. So I checked the data again and fo…

Profile Information

What is your favorite electric car and why?
I'm about to change my favorite to Ginetta G50 EV; unless one can have two favorites, one for summer and one for winter.
Th!nk Open because it's an electric powered convertible. There is another one I'd like to own, but I could never afford it, so it remains a "dream car".
I'd like to find the orange Th!nk Open that was lost in Canada somewhere. If you have any - any at all - info on that car, please contact me.

I have serious plans to put a 2001 Th!nk drivetrain in a ICE car. In May 2009 I bought a 1973 Ginetta G15 for the purpose.

New Th!nk gets thumbs up in British test drive

Auto Express reports that Th!nk cost "only 2p per mile to run" and that "moving off from traffic lights raises a few eyebrows as maximum torque is available from a standstill – and lets you pull away quickly and quietly."

Found it! Found a car for converting to silent electric power! Yesss! I'm on the move!

What kind of car it is? Some think it looks like a Fiat Spider, others say Alfa Romeo, Triumph, Lotus or MG. It's called Ginetta and this model is the Brit… Continue

Plastic versus steel - Th!nk vs Mercedes

When two cars arrive at an intersection with no traffic lights or signs at the same time there are rules for which car should yield. For every time some hurried driver is successful in hitting my car I avoid at least 10. But this one hit me and spun my car around 180 degrees. Excuse t… Continue

Tom--

There is another way of categorizing such cars which I prefer: SERIAL hybrids, and PARALLEL hybrids.

A parallel hybrid, such as the Prius, has two separate drive systems. A parallel hybrid has several disadvantages, including massive complexity and greater difficulty in converting it to a pure battery EV when we have enough charging stations that we will not need hybrids.

A serial hybrid, such as the Volt, is more complex than either a conventional ICE car or a battery powered EV (BEV), but it is superior to a parallel hybrid because the motor and the power generating systems are discrete and so it would be easier, once EV charging stations are commonplace, to remove the generating system-- the alternator or generator, the engine and gas tank-- and replace them with a second battery pack to give the car greater range.

ICEs have had more than a century to mature and are still highly inefficient; reciprocating mechanical parts are inherently power-robbing and maintenance-intensive. They will never be able to compete with electric motors for simplicity, quietude and longevity. It's just unfortunate it took us 100 years to develop batteries suitable to use with them.

I'm genuinely excited and encouraged to see the quantum leaps in performance batteries are going through-- there are several new technologies that very soon may give us batteries that can increase the range we can drive by an order of magnitude or more-- imagine a Tesla being able to drive more than 2,000 miles on a single charge, with a battery pack of the same size, weight and cost, but simpler and quicker-charging. One of these technologies is the St. Andrews Air (STAIR) battery, which we may find on the market within 3 to 5 years.

But as good as the STAIR is, there are other battery technologies that may be just as promising, and by combining these various technologies, we may eventually have batteries that will give us 20, 30 or more times as much energy storage than the best batteries today.

I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas, impatient for an exciting new toy under the tree.

One of the greatest incentives I have for promoting the use of EVs is that we spend several hundred billion dollars every year on foreign oil, and when we eventually progress beyond our need for ICE cars, that's hundreds of billions of dollars we can then divert to handling our national debt, and our educational, health, and transportation systems, all of which are crumbling and badly in need of attention.

Thanks, Tom! EVS24 was great, but you're right- not nearly enough time to meet everyone. Perhaps next time?

Hi Tom, I won't be taking part in the rally (sadly) as I have to (really) work there as I'm part of the organizing committee.

Hope to meet you and good luck!
